Over the columns the letters of the word bingo are arranged, B in one column, I in one column, N in one column, G in one column, and O in one column. The N column has free space left intentionally empty to complete the required pattern.

Patterns in bingo are widely used in American versions. The patterns can be a shape, an alphabet or anything as described by the bingo site to qualify for the winning.
